Fibre, OTDR & transmission

Fibre splicing and OTDR, done and documented.

Fusion splicing, OTDR traces, fault location, circuit acceptance testing and transmission equipment work, for carriers, data centres and enterprises.

Fibre work

Proof, not guesswork.

When a fibre link fails or underperforms, you need to know where and why, not just that it is down. IITECH engineers use OTDR and light-level testing to find breaks, bad splices, tight bends and dirty connectors. Then we fix them and prove the repair with a fresh trace.

We also work on the carrier side. That means BER and RFC 2544 testing for circuit acceptance, and installs, patching and card swaps on SDH and DWDM transmission equipment. The engineer who splices your fibre understands the equipment that runs over it.

Johannesburg and Gauteng work is our day-to-day. Fibre work elsewhere in South Africa, and on request across Africa, is planned with you.

From a single dirty connector to a full route of splices.

  • Fusion splicingSingle-mode and multimode splicing in closures, trays and patch panels, with splice loss recorded.
  • OTDR testingTraces for new builds and repairs, with event tables showing splices, connectors and distances.
  • Fault locationFinding breaks, macro-bends and high-loss events, then repairing and re-testing.
  • Light-level and loss testingPower meter and light source testing to confirm the link budget.
  • Connector inspection and cleaningScoping and cleaning connectors, still one of the most common fixes.
  • BER/RFC testingBit error rate and RFC 2544 testing for circuit acceptance and troubleshooting.
  • SDH/DWDM field workTransmission equipment installs, patching, card swaps and commissioning support.
  • Test reportsTrace files and summary reports you can attach to hand-over packs or tickets.

How it works

How fibre jobs run.

Baseline, fix, prove.

  1. Brief

You share the route, link IDs, end points and any existing traces or records.

  2. Test

We test from the relevant end points to baseline the link and locate the problem.

  3. Repair

We splice, re-terminate or clean, depending on the fault, and keep you updated.

  4. Prove

A new trace and loss results confirm the fix and go into your report.

Response times and SLAs. We take 24/7 emergency fibre callouts. Callouts and planned work are covered by response targets we agree with you in advance, based on location and access. We confirm them in writing, not as a headline number.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Something else you need to know? Ask an engineer directly.

What is an OTDR test?

An optical time-domain reflectometer sends light pulses down a fibre and measures what reflects back. The trace shows the distance to splices, connectors, bends and breaks, and how much loss each one causes.

Do you do fibre splicing in Johannesburg?

Yes. We do fusion splicing across Johannesburg and Gauteng, in buildings, comms rooms, data centres and on campus routes, and further afield by arrangement.

Can you find a fault on an existing link?

Yes. We test from one or both ends, locate the fault on the trace, repair it, then re-test and give you the before-and-after results.

What is BER or RFC 2544 testing?

BER testing checks a circuit for bit errors over time. RFC 2544 is a standard set of tests for throughput, latency, frame loss and back-to-back frames. Both are used to accept new circuits and to troubleshoot.

Do you provide trace files?

Yes. You get the trace files and a summary report, ready to attach to your ticket or hand-over pack.
